Description

Possibly the best Penfolds Grange ever produced and one of Max Schurbert's favourites due to winning a gold medal at the 1962 Sydney Royal Show in the Open Claret Class. Many judges had previously been vocally critical of the style. Iconic US Magazine, Wine Spectator, even chose the wine as a 'Wine of the Millennium'. The wine itself has a deep brick red appearance, with a nose of coffee, mocha and gamey meats with some leathery notes. The palate is still fleshy, supple and smooth with corresponding mocha and gamey flavours. Silken tannins are present with an everlasting fruit sweet length.

This is the ultimate Penfolds Grange, winning 12 trophies and 51 gold medals over 13 years from 1962. It is a very long lived Penfolds Grange and considered one of the best wines ever produced in Australia.
The 1955 Penfolds Grange is a 'lighter' Grange and spent only nine months in oak. This wine was a favourite of Max Schubert's, because this was the vintage that vindicated him by winning a gold medal in the open claret class at the 1962 Sydney Wine Show. Bottles were labelled under several Bin Numbers, those being 13, 14,53, 54 and 95.

Deep brick red in colour. Nose mocha/gamy/coffee/grilled meat aromas with some camomile/leather notes. It is a fleshy, supple and smooth wine with mature meaty, gamy, mocha flavours and satin-textured tannins with a long fruit sweet finish. Grapes were sourced from vineyards located in Magill Estate (Adelaide), Morphett Vale (Adelaide), Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley) and the McLaren Vale. The vintage was mild to warm with ideal growing conditions, a wet growing season with rainfall 60 per cent above average. This wine is a blend of Shiraz (90%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). Those bottles in excellent condition are still drinking well (2008).
