Description

The development of Penfolds Red Winemaking Trial (RWT) reflects extraordinary progress in viticulture and winemaking. The two disciplines are increasingly intertwined, as growers and winemakers work together in search of optimum balance, ripeness and flavour.
RWT draws fruit from 20 to 100 year-old vineyards arcing across the west and north-west of the Barossa Valley, mostly independently grown. The best vineyards produce fruit of voluptuous intensity, ripe tannins, and juicy flavours. The RWT Shiraz has a very seductive style with a plum/blueberry fruit profile and fine ripe tannins underpinned by savoury French oak.

John Duval spent 29 years as a winemaker with Penfolds, one of Australia's most famous wineries, before starting his own wine label in 2003.
He was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and oversaw one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. With the support of his team in the Barossa he secured a number of awards including Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and seeing the 1990 Penfolds Grange named the Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995.

Since its first vintage in 1997, collectors have recognised the sheer class of RWT. Already the wine has a strong secondary market following, illustrating its collectability and cellaring potential.

95/100 Jeremy Oliver 94/100 James Halliday 92/100 The Wine Spectator

Excellent Cellartracker Notes:

4/21/2013 - DRINKING TREES WROTE:
Tasted blind. The nose seemed worryingly disjointed and decayed, with notes of cherry, rotten fruit, kerosene, amaretto and sweat. In contrast, the palate was smooth and perfectly composed. Light and juicy mouthfeel. Flavours of cherry and tomato, with hints of thyme, nutmeg and powdered ginger. Very interesting, as I've enjoyed RWTs at tastings but have never tasted an aged one (and I couldn't have tasted one with more age than this, as this was the very first vintage).
3/22/2013 - GOLDSTONE LIKES THIS WINE:93 Points
Runny Returns.....the Great Australian Wine Dinner. (Chez Patrick Restaurant, 2/F, Garden East, 222 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong): Two bottles decanted 5 hours before serving and drinking over the following 3 hours. Black-red opaque colour. Nose is lifted violets and a hint of Eucalyptus but all quite new road tar on a cold day and buttoned down...leathery element at the back end. Palate is sharp acidity but beautiful powdered and feminine finesse.....pencil lead, grace and sharpness. If a Japanese took 1000 pencils and sharpened every one, this would be the one they judged to be the best. It is a bit tight on the finish...good length but lacks thunderous reverberance, but has a feminine persistency that you can't argue with. Needs a few more years to blossom.....thanks, Runny.
4/21/2012 - JKOENEN WROTE:94 Points
Dreamtasting #4 (Restaurant de Watermolen, Kasterlee): Had some bottle variation over the time, but when it performs, this wine is drop dead gorgeous... Tonight it did. Smoky cedar, graceful herbaceousness, mint, thyme, grilled meat, soft redberried fruit in the back. Completely mature and finely tuned, yet muscular and strong. Most participants preferred this over the Grange 1994 which was poured simultaneously.

4/21/2012 - WINEMAKER WROTE:94 Points
Gorgeous wine. Medium ruby. Smells of plummy fruit. tastes the same without a lot of eucalyptus and a long finish with nice palate cleansing acidity. Drinking really well.
