Description

"The 2006 Sassicaia may very well go down as one of the all-time great recent vintages for this Tuscan thoroughbred... The wine is simply glorious, that's all there is to it.
This is one for the ages. In a word: Awesome."
Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate

Just about everyone who has tasted the 2006 Sassicaia has walked away with big words and serious praise for the wine.

Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate laid down the law in his recent review, writing, "The 2006 Sassicaia may very well go down as one of the all-time great recent vintages for this Tuscan thoroughbred... Everything is in the right place in this magical Sassicaia. This is one for the ages. In a word: Awesome."

Yes, it's the easy and obvious comparison, but more than one taster has brought up the mythical 1985 Sassicaia in reference to the 2006. It is the "completeness" of both wines that almost demands the comparison: Both Sassicaias have a fullness matched to an exquisite balance, a density of concentration that lavishes the palate along with an aromatic vividness. Both wines are just incredibly integrated, a complete wine from beginning to end in a way that very, very few are.

In life as in winemaking, it's the simple things that can be so elusive.

It's been some time since we've really concerned ourselves with "collectibility" and any promise of a wine's investment potential seems more than a little foolhardy at the present moment. Still, time moves on and with the 1985 Sassicaia fetching prices of nearly $2,000 per bottle, it seem just as foolhardy not to mention that this wine is likely to have a very promising future.

As in 1985, 2006 gave to this wine exactly what it needed. 2006 is a great vintage throughout Tuscany, one of those years where if you were responsible in the vineyard and in the cellar, you could shape a very, very good wine. The vintage, the weather conditions, offered only the potential for greatness. As is always the case, the top terroir and the most rigorous selection and cellar work were also mandatory for making a truly world class bottling like the 2006 Sassicaia.

Unlike some "prestige cuvée" Super Tuscans on the market, Sassicaia is not a monotone effort; it is not an over-the-top bottle attempting to woo palates with sweet-fruity showiness. Instead, especially in vintages like 85 and 06, they are subtle and precisely made, built for long haul in a style that hearkens a great Pauillac like Lafite or Mouton-Rothschild, yet with a distinctly Italian spirit. Sassicaia has the exclusive honor as the only wine in Italy to have its own DOC the "DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia."
