Vega-Sicilia is unofficially Spain's "First Growth" and,located in Ribera del Duero,is its most prestigious wine estate.
Unico Reserva Especial Non-Vintage is normally a blend of three top vintages and is made up of Tinto Fino,a clone of Tempranillo (80%),Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot and traditionally had ten years of ageing in barrel,but now Javier Ausas has reduced the ageing of the Unica wines to 5-6 years before bottling.
Vega-Sicilia applies low yields,aided by green harvesting and a painstaking grape selection.In the winery,wines undertake a complicated series of rackings from huge barrels to new and old oak.
Despite very prolonged barrel ageing,the wine flavours are never dried out or overly oaky when mature,which is compelling evidence of the superb quality of the raw material.
