Description

The wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels and it’s a tribute to the intensity of the fruit that the wood is scarcely discernible. The bouquet is classic St Julien, with cassis, lead pencil, plum and tobacco leaf; the palate has a great depth and weight of fruit but still in a framework of elegance and breed. The tannins are plentiful but are ripe and show no sense of austerity; above all the wine shows none of the slightly green austere characteristics which used to be the hallmark of South African Cabernet. This is attribute to winemaker Andre van Rensburg and his policy of re-planting the vineyard with vines completely free of the leaf-roll virus which has afflicted some of the country’s vineyards.
