The 1978 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is considered by the wine cognoscenti to be the greatest ever vintage produced at this estate.According to WineSearcher,currently no retailer (in the world) has this wine on their books and the last time the wine was available was in February 2015,with an average price of £243.
"The colossal 1978 remains the reference point for Vieux Telegraphe,although 1998 may challenge it.I have drunk nearly three cases of this wine,and it remains incredibly youthful,with a thick,murky,purple/black color as well as spectacular aromatics of licorice,dried herbs,smoked meats,,and sweet,jammy prune,blackberry and cassis fruit.This full-bodied wine has thrown a tremendous amount of sediment,but it remains vigorous,exuberant,muscular and fresh.It may evolve and drink well for 10-15 years.It is an amazing achievement".

It's almost impossible to fathom how young this wine was showing after more than 3 decades of aging".
