A superb Champagne and still youthful. Honey, ginger, lemon confit, coffee and mineral aromas and flavors come to mind, all kept focused by a firm, tightly wound structure. The finish is where its pedigree shines through, lingering like warm gingerbread and coffee. (10/2003) 98/100 points Wine Spectator

Three recent bottles of Krug's 1988 Vintage have all been spectacular. Dried apricot, tobacco, orange peel and spice notes meld together in a Champagne of nearly indescribable finesse. Soft and inviting, yet back up by beams of lively minerality, the 1988 is in a great place right now. It should drink well for another decade-plus, but it would be a shame to miss the wine in its current state of pure beauty. 97/100 points Vinous (AG) (11/2013)

Ineffable yeast autolysis aromas (biscuit, meal, nuts) virtually resist characterization; reminded me of a great Chevalier-Montrachet. A wine of extraordinary depth of flavor, vinosity and class, thanks to penetrating but perfectly harmonious, lipsmacking acidity. Quite dry but with wonderfully ripe fruit. Very firm and youthful on the finish, but already displays explosive flavor. A great vintage for Krug. 96+/100 (Stephen Tanzer)

96/100 points Wine & Spirits

Opulent hazelnut, brioche and apple strudel aromas on the nose with a faint whiff of chalk dust. The palate is restrained and notably taut for Krug with high acidity and tightly wound roasted nut, stone fruit and toasted croissant flavours. Fine, frisky bubbles and a long praline finish. 95/100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Incredibly sophisticated from the bouquet’s first full toast, apple, thyme, meal, orange, even meaty notes. The fine steady bead, mouthcoating, creamy feel and deep vanilla, apple and earth flavors comprise a very complete statement about age-worthy Champagne. It's mature, and shows subtleties youthful wines cannot, but it's still lively, and displays a wealth of life and spirit through the tangy flavored but smoothly textured finish. 93/100 points Wine Enthusiast

At the moment, just beats the superlative 1990. Honeyed and briary on the nose, it envelops with orange flavours, toffee voluptuousness and buttery texture. Stupendous. ***** Decanter

Opening out on the nose now - no longer the austere, slightly green aromas it once had. Something between blossom and mushrooms. Very Chardonnay. Rapier-like, marked acidity and very crystalline. Very persistent. RK cited the examples of the 1981 and 1982 vintages and 1961 and 1962 as being other examples of sequential and very different vintages like 1988 and 1989. 19.5/20 points Jancis Robinson

K&L Notes
The best of Krug's fruit in the classic 1988 vintage went into this powerful, masculine, barrel-fermented Champagne, a testament to the greatness of the vintage, the producer, and the vineyards. 96 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted at a hotel in Zurich, this remains a stunning Krug. Deep and lucid in colour, it retains that show-stopping, honeyed bouquet with breathtaking definition, offering hints of cut lime, cooking apple, cold granite, citrus lemon and a hint of walnut. The palate is taut, driven by vibrant acidity, hints of passion fruit and white peach, but at its heart is that sense of precision and poise. The finish has a beguiling candied quality that flirts daringly and beckons another sip. Heavenly and perhaps starting to drink at its peak.
