Description

This large Pauillac fifth growth is well known as a dependable property whose wine often surpasses the quality of more highly ranked properties. In this lot a bottle each of the 2003 and 2004 vintages is being offered as wines that are ready to drink in contrasting styles.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a typical Pauillac cepage of 75% cab sauvignon, 20% merlot and 5% cabernet franc, but both vintages proved difficult for the merlot; in 2003 coping less well with the heat, and in 2004 suffering dilution from the rains at harvest. As a consequence these are very cabernet-expressive wines with cedar and cassis notes. The 2003 has avoided over-ripeness in the fruit and 2004 has achieved respectable concentration and structure. While you could expect these wines to be on a plateau and hold significantly longer, it is my impression that both are at their peak. As ever, I recommend that potential bidders look at recent cellartracker reviews and not only older professional ratings.

These bottles were purchased en primeur and stored in my cool cellar since release. Inevitably the labels show minor discolouration. More importantly the levels of both bottles are into the neck (the 2003 is a very high fill) and there is no sign of ullage. The labels show a number of subtle differences as the 2004 vintage coincided with major improvements in the winery.
