Description

One bottle of this wine, currently retaining at over £210 in the UK.

90 points Wine Spectator: "A complete wine that gives much satisfaction. Medium- to full-bodied, with good intensity of clever oak, blackberries, cassis, smoke, blood orange and mineral. Complex and thick-textured." (12/2001)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Lavishly oaked with creamy and toasty aromas yet with a good core of underlying fruit. The tannins are modulated and suave, underpinning medium weight, decidedly earthy flavors. Stylish, delicious, even a bit flashy though this could use more stuffing and is definitely not for those who are sensitive to generous amounts of new oak...The holdings of this 13.6 ha Domaine are spectacular with an incredible 7 ha of grands crus, including 2.1 ha in Clos de Vougeot, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze (.33 ha) and Chambertin (.46 ha), which because of their small sizes are combined to make a Chambertin, almost one hectare of Mazis-Chambertin (located in Mazis-Haut and Bas) and 1.3 ha of Charmes-Chambertin (located in Charmes proper). There are Gevrey 1ers in Fontenys and La Perrière (though only a Fontenys is released) and a substantial 7 ha of village Gevrey. The impressive holding of Clos de Vougeot is located in the middle of the slope in the middle of the Clos. The Domaine has been directed since 1981 by Jean de Surrel the great grandson of General Henri Rebourseau. In 1989, de Surrel was one of the earliest adopters in the Côte d'Or of the very controversial practice of machine picking. This practice will be modified for the 2001 vintage with respect to the 4 grands crus and for an old vine Gevrey cuvée at the request of his American importers; these hand-harvested cuvées will only be available in the U.S. market." (1/2002)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The estate owns a large (over two hectares) parcel of 47-year-old vines in the Clos Vougeot. The 1999 reveals sweet spices and intense black fruits in its aromatics. It is extremely tannic (nearly astringent) and reveals blackberry, herb, and stone flavors. If its fruit can sustain its tannin, as well as the obligatory fining and filtration employed at this estate, this wine will ultimately merit a good review." (8/2001)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full red. Somewhat medicinal aromas of cherry, licorice and herbs. Cool and backward, with the medicinal quality carrying through on the palate. Possesses a firm core of spice but finishes with rather tough tannins. Here's a '99 that will not be for early drinking." (4/2001)

The bottle on sale is my only bottle and is the one shown in the photographs. The level and capsule are decent. There is some slight scuffing at the bottom of the front label as shown.
