Description

2001 Serpico
WS 94
Wine Spectator, February 2004
Bold and structured red. Dark color; black licorice raspberry and mineral character and hints of dried flowers; full-bodied with spicy fruit and undertones of black pepper. Chewy finish. This is fantastic. Best after 2007. 5000 cases made. –JS

Robert Parker s Wine Advocate, August 2010
The 2001 Serpico is another wine that appears to need more bottle age. Today it is in an in-between stage where the fruit is no longer primary but the tertiary notes aren t fully developed either. The 2001 is a powerful Serpico with impressive tannic clout that will require further cellaring to soften. With time hints of wild cherries herbs chocolate and leather emerge but only with great reluctance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.92+ -AG

Feudi di San Gregorio "Serpico" Campania 1997

94 points James Suckling
Outer quote mark A balanced and delicious red now with plum and light clove character. Hints of volcanic ash. Full body, soft tannins and a fruity finish. Very reserved and refined. Firmness at the end. Drink now or hold.

93 points Wine Enthusiast
Serpico is a bold, larger-than-life wine, with beautiful aromatic intensity and notes of black fruit, espresso and crushed granite. Some 18 months of oak aging adds elements of dark spice and smoke; and the wine shows firm tannins and a long, polished mouthfeel. It’s very elegant and should withstand many more years of cellar aging.

92 points Robert Parker s Wine Advocate
The 1997 Serpico (Aglianico) is dark, powerful and intense. Black cherries, tar, asphalt and menthol are some of the nuances that emerge from this vibrant, tightly coiled Serpico. The 1997 will require cellaring, but the wine has a brilliant track record of repaying patience.

91 points Wine Spectator
The dark and brooding flavors of brambly berry, underbrush, aged balsamic vinegar and black licorice are underscored by a rich note of tarry smoke in this burly red. The muscular tannins clamp down on the finish. Needs some time. Best from 2015 through 2023.
