The 1989 vintage for Piedmont was truly excellent, one of the all-time greats.
Overall, all the grape varieties crucial to Barolo and Barbaresco – Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo –were in great condition. Many of the resulting reds were considered exceptional; big, alcoholic and structured with rich, concentrated fruit. Many had the capacity to age for a very long time. Some very good whites were also produced.
It is more than likely there will still be some great wines drinking now, but be prepared to pay some hefty prices.
