Description

The 1971 Piedmont vintage was excellent.

The growing season began with a freezing cold winter that lingered through to the spring, which saw severe bouts of hail cut yields for both Barolo and Barbaresco. However, despite the inauspicious start, an excellent summer soon delivered hot, dry weather, which helped push the grapes towards phenolic ripeness. These great conditions continued into the autumn and a wonderfully idyllic October ensued.

As a consequence of the rough start to the growing season, the crop was exceptionally small but also exceptionally concentrated, with both Barolo and Barbaresco producing some wonderful wines capable of great cellaring. To a lesser extent, both Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba were also hugely successful.

Overall, the 1971 Piedmont vintage was extremely good. Although many wines are inevitably likely to be past their prime, the very best examples might still be drinking well. However, these are likely to be as rare as hen's teeth but careful research could reward in some sublime finds.
