Description

This is a fascinating - not to mention painfully rare - wine produced only in 2016 by the renowned Napa estate Ovid.

The "C4" part of the wine's moniker relates to Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon; a variety that was first planted in Argentina in the 1800s as phylloxera ravaged the vines of Europe. It first made it's way to California in 1964 mislabelled for years as Merlot.

For Experiment No. C 4.6, separate lots of Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon were aged independently for one year then assembled a blend using a small portion of Petit Verdot with the Clone 4 Cabernet. This was aged for an additional 8 months before bottling.

The experiment confirmed Ovid's preference of this clone, with the estate noting that "it makes wines that are rich and powerful with a presence on the palate that is almost always totally complete on its own. It is rare to find such an unabridged expression in a single site, and when one does, it should be celebrated"

Reviewers on Cellar Tracker have rated this wine at an average of 94/100. Here's your chance to test the result yourself.
