A set of 8 new and unused high-end red wine glasses from world renowned 11th generation Austrian glass manufacturers Riedel (founded in 1756) in original box.
Their iconic handblown glassware is among the most beautiful, artisanal pieces to serve wine in.
All glasses come with Riedel stickers attached and in their original protective boxes.
The glasses retail at 95£ each, making this an almost 800£ set.
These are from Riedel 's icnonic entirely hand-made and mouth-blown flagship line "Sommeliers " - this set also includes the legendary Sommeliers Burgundy glass which is probably the only piece of wine paraphernalia that is exhibited at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in Manhattan, NYC!
This set of 2 each of 4 different glasses allows to taste the vast majority of available wines from the perfectly fitting and shaped glassware:
2 Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru glasses:
The most iconic and recognisable Burgundy glass in the world, exhibited at the MOMA.
This huge glass was one of the original designs that started the movement of varietal specific glassware in the 20th century.
A flared tulip shape that could theoretically be filled with the content of more than an entire standard bottle (the tech specs give the volume at 1050ccm) and which is perfectly suited to emphasise the perfume of pinot noir based wines.
Besides Burgundy and new world pinot it also works greatly with the great Italian wines like Barolo and Barbaresco and even with rich, oaked Chardonnays.
2 Sommeliers Bordeaux Grand Cru glasses:
Created specifically to enjoy more tannic and fuller bodied red wines.
However, I find the glasses to work with any type of Cabernet or Merlot based wines, including New World variants.
These glasses have are elegant and tall with a huge bowl with a capacity of 860ccm!
2 Sommeliers Riesling/White wine Grand Cru glasses:
The most versatile and universal white wine glass in the Riedel line-up it basically works with any type of white wine, from Riesling to fresh Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or white Bordeaux.
However, I found these glasses also useful for various dessert wines and in particular for some red varieties such as Syrah or wine from Rioja and generally for extremely vintage red wines (40 years+) that might be too fragile for a huge glass such as the Sommeliers Bordeaux.
2 Sommeliers vintage Champagne glasses:
A relatively classic and elegant shape for a Champagne glass that is shaped like a slim and tall white wine glass - focusing on bringing out the complexity of vintage and Cuvee Prestige Champagnes.
Of course it is suitable for other quality sparkling wines as well.
The reserve is at 300£ - far less than half of the retail price.
