Description

There's evidence of an estate - and, indeed, wine being grown - here since Roman times. Subsequently, the land and vineyards belonged to a local monastery, but passed into private hands after Napoleon secularised church property. In 1882 Carl Ferdinand Freiherr von Stumm-Halberg bought the Grünhaus estate and transformed it, bringing in electric power supplied by a turbine in the River Ruwer as well as machines to transport equipment around the vineyards. His son having died early, the daughter received the estate as a dowry in her marriage to Conrad von Schubert. Today the fifth generation of Von Schubert's runs the estate.

90 points John Gilman
The 2001 Abtsberg spätlese is another very lovely wine for the 'slump' period at the estate. Clearly the depth and intensity here are just a tad below the property’s very, very high standards of 1998 and prior (or the Maximin Grünhäuser results in the 2004 and 2005 vintages for that matter), but this is still a very beautifully balanced and complex wine of outstanding filigree. The arresting bouquet offers up a potpourri of candied apple, lime zest, fresh-picked spearmint, lovely slate underpinnings and a lavender top note. With air a bit of yellow plum adds to the aromatic complexity. On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and focused, with quite good depth, fine brightness, sound acids and very good length on the classy finish. This is quite accessible already, and though the grip is not quite as profound as legendary vintages of spätlese from the Abtsberg, this is still a very fine bottle of wine by any stretch of the imagination. (6/2006)

90 points Wine Spectator
Very tasty. Almost like fruit juice, this offers peach, apple and mineral notes on a rich, open texture, all enveloping the vibrant acidity. Fine lingering finish. (BS) (12/2002)

Both bottles are in excellent condition and have been in professional storage until recently
