Description

2003 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese:-

(Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese) AP: 06 04. This is still very light in color and shows quite some CO2 upon opening. The nose exhibits very refined and comparatively fresh notes of white flowers, yellow peach and smoke. It is only on the palate that a touch of melon and almond paste comes through and give the wine a fruitier and riper profile. The whole thing is nicely balanced, light and fresh, also thanks to the touch of CO2. It still needs however to integrate its residual sugar. 2023-2038

Score: 91 Jean Fisch & David Rayer, Mosel Fine Wines (21), January 2013

2002 J.J. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese, Mosel, Germany:-

Notes from Cellar tracker:-

2/24/2016 - chcook Likes this wine:

AP #36. This had a slightly leaky cork but no harm done. Straw colour, This wine is entering into maturity. Swishing highlights the utter balance between the dense acid structure and fruit which is predominantly grapefruit. The nose is dominated by TDN but under that I get mixed yellow fruits. Sipping this shows how acid can lift the fruit and keep RS from seeming sweet. I really enjoy this now and look forward to further evolution

7/31/2015 - Keith Levenberg Likes this wine: 96 Points

Second recent chance to taste this beauty without having to sacrifice one of my own bottles. Score! This is about as classic Mosel as you will ever find, with the recent fashion of putting dessert-wine auslese in a spatlese package having completely passed J.J. Prum by. It's sharp and steely with a serrated edge and a level of sweetness that would almost put this in halbtrocken territory if it were a recent release (and this was actually quite sweet when it came out - funny how Prum manages that and so many others, um, don't). The fruit complexion is still focused on the high notes but still shows some of the depth of bottle development, with a cider green apple bite on a base of slate.
