Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This is the finest young vintage of de Fargues I have had the privilege of tasting. That should not come as a surprise given how extraordinary d’Yquem turned out in this vintage. The toasty, honeyed, rich bouquet is redolent of pineapples, coconut, creme brulée and coffee. In the mouth, this fabulously rich, full-bodied wine offers plenty of the botrytised, pineapple and other tropical fruit flavours, a lavish, unctuous texture, enough acidity to provide freshness and focus, and a heady, spicy, truly intoxicating finish. Last tasted, 3/90
Amateurs of great Sauternes will know of this wine and château for as soon as you look at the bottle you see the similarity to that of the most famous Sauternes of all - not really a surprise, as they own the property.
Fargues is the historic seat of the Lur Saluces family in the Gironde. This family, one of the oldest in the region, with roots going back to the Crusades, settled in Fargues over five centuries ago, in 1472. Dynamic and enterprising, the Lur Saluces family have had a strong influence in Sauternes and the Bordeaux region since the late 17th century. They possessed a veritable winegrowing empire in the 19th century, owning such famous estates as Château d’Yquem, Château Filhot, Château Coutet, Château de Fargues, Château de Malle.
While de Fargues has never been classified the quality of the wine produced here is brilliant. This is the finest young vintage of de Fargues I have had the privilege of tasting.
