Description

TWO lots of TWO bottles.

The first of three consecutive legendary Sauternes vintages '88, '89 & 1990.

Direct from their original wooden case. Evidently the case has been stored in rather a damp cellar, no bad thing and which very much helps to conserve good levels.

These four labels are complete and not missing any vitals.
The capsules are all pristine.
Levels are Base of Neck, or higher.

Nov 2010 Neal Martin 88 Drink 2010 - 2020
Ex-cellar bottle served at Chateau Coutet. The ’88 Coutet has a pale hue considering its age. The nose I find rather simple vis-a-vis the ’89 with dried honey, beeswax, barley sugar and quince, perhaps a little subdued, though it opens after 30 minutes to offer a redeeming floral aroma. The palate is much better: vibrant on the entry with hints of spice and marmalade. Very pure with notes of mango, dried nectarine, jasmine and stem ginger, good weight in the mouth although not the pedigree of complexity that I believe Coutet demonstrates today. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2010.

The lighter-bodied, drier 1988 is less weighty than the 1989, with attractive, spicy, vanillin, citrus scents, medium body, and an earthy note that kept my score from going higher.
