Ex-cellar bottle served at Chateau Coutet. The ’88 Coutet has a pale hue considering its age. The nose I find rather simple viz-à-viz the ’89 with dried honey, beeswax, barley sugar and quince, perhaps a little subdued, though it opens after 30 minutes to offer a redeeming floral aroma. The palate is much better: vibrant on the entry with hints of spice and marmalade. Very pure with notes of mango, dried nectarine, jasmine and stem ginger. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2010.

The lighter-bodied, drier 1988 is less weighty than the 1989, with attractive, spicy, vanillin, citrus scents, medium body, and an earthy note that kept my score from going higher.
