What a treat to try this at this age. I really do like aged Sauternes although they are clearly a different wine than in their youth. The nose has caramel with some burnt oranges. On the palate, this is sugary and caramel with some citrus. There is enough acidity to make this lively though. There is also a depth, not layered, but depth that is a nice complexity.

2/13/2016 - EHRLICHDY LIKES THIS WINE: 93 Points
Enjoyed from a half bottle with panna cotta for Valentines Day dessert at Charlie Palmer. Popped and poured. The cork was absolutely perfect with no wine coming up the side. The color was golden yellow with a tinge of orange. The wine was youthful and delicious with notes of orange marmalade balanced by refreshing acidity. I suspect that the wine will gain complexity as it continues to age and well stored bottles easily have another 20 years left. Well balanced and really quite good.

2/6/2016 - GURIBH LIKES THIS WINE: 93 Points
Deep golden color. Fragrant aromas of ripe melon, honey and apricot. Balanced, deep and not overly sweet. Some ginger enters into the mix. Peak drinking. Excellent.

COUTET 1988.
The first of three consecutive great Sauternes vintages This bottle is in good shape with an in neck level.

Wine Journal
Nov 2010 NEAL MARTIN 88 Drink 2010 - 2020
Ex-cellar bottle served at Chateau Coutet. The ’88 Coutet has a pale hue considering its age. The nose I find rather simple vis-à-vis the ’89 with dried honey, beeswax, barley sugar and quince, perhaps a little subdued, though it opens after 30 minutes to offer a redeeming floral aroma. The palate is much better: vibrant on the entry with hints of spice and marmalade. Very pure with notes of mango, dried nectarine, jasmine and stem ginger, good weight in the mouth although not the pedigree of complexity that I believe Coutet demonstrates today. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2010.
