Funny, just the previous evening I was commenting to Matt about how much I used to like this particular Spätlese before it turned into an auction-only bottling. What a great surprise to see it show up at the Chard tasting (thanks Adrian), and this is absolutely fantastic. There's a spectrum of fruit ranging from more classic apple and pear to riper tropical and pineapple flavours, and it's accented by bright floral notes, touches of honey and a vivid stony character. This has the sweetness and intensity of an Auslese, but there's powerful acidity beneath that keeps it very well balanced and it's a really fantastic wine that's absolutely thrilling to drink right now, as young as it is.

Chicago Chardonnay Shootout (Chicago, IL): Fruity, aromatic, and mineral on the nose. Just gorgeous. The palate's got a profile to match -- very long, and a ton of that delicious '07 acidity to balance the sweetness. Doesn't taste like a seven-year-old wine, and it certainly hasn't shut down at all!

#20-08. Light golden colour. Deep nose with aromas of tart white peach, a hit of matchstick and coconut, and an undertone of golden apple and other floral characteristics. On the palate, this is just short of auslese sweetness, with flavours of baked green apple and a crisp mineral texture. Like a green laser, this has intense focus. Very long finish with a hint of bitter almond."
