Giles MacDonogh describes Emmerich as “scatty”, and it is true that he looks a bit like a distracted don, but he is a deeply serious and traditional winemaker with spotless cellars filled with oak vats and some small inox tanks. He has just less than ten hectares of vines, very largely planted to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. His Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, when conditions permit their making, are for my palate, the best in the Wachau, if not in the whole of Austria. Like all his wines, they benefit from age.
