Description

A wine of legend, with lots of recent, glowing tasting notes:

"Very deep copper/orange with a greenish rim and green leafy aromas. Some savoury notes. Great grace, life and raciness. Slight grapefruit. Real class and a lovely lift. Bursting with health. Has structure and is long and is the most dignified wine of the lot. This is a throat-warmer with hints of orange peel. Vibrant. Health juice. Wonderful clean palate-washer." Maturity: 2003-2020

"What can I say about the legendary Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1947? A bewitching wine, with such purity and harmony that it came as no surprise that Gaston considered it a reference point for all that was to come. Undoubtedly one of the greatest sweet wines I have been fortunate enough to taste and moreover, reasonably priced considering its rarity and intrinsic quality. Taste this once in your life – you will not regret it. "

"Original bottle. A deep amber hue with thick tears on the glass. An almost ineffable nose, incredibly intense of marmalade, tangerine, a touch of seashells. Very Sauternes-like. A beautifully palate with exquisite balance, pure botrytized fruit, an effortless quality to it. Not dissimilar to Sauternes, amazing crescendo towards the intense, focused finish of marmalade, quince, tangerine and citrus fruit. Very long aftertaste. A wine difficult to encapsulate into words. Amazing. Drink now-2020+. Tasted August 2007."

"..1947 Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Moelleux from Gaston Huet, one of the greatest wines I've ever tasted."

Pierre-Antoine Ravoni, Mark Squires' Bulletin Board, erobertparker.com (February 2012)

"The most highly respected Loire vintage of the 20th Century and in Gaston Huet’s own words ‘The greatest vintage I ever made’. The harvest commenced on the 19th September. Polished. Complex appearance with orange bronze moving to olive green at the rim. A mature nose with some positive oxidation. Complex and smoky with aromas of brown sugar and cinnamon. Beautiful on entry, it has poise and perfect balance. It is delicate, elegant, textured with a fresh, pure apple purée nose combined with toffee apples, crème brûlée and pommeau. There is a pure, racy acidity that contributes to the incredible length and persistence. This will continue to age indefinitely. A perfect wine. (08/04)."

Richard Kelley MW: "The definitive guide to the wines of the Loire".

"As well as being a seminal year in Bordeaux, 1947 is generally credited as being the Loire’s best post-war vintage. Coincidentally, it was the year in which the late Gaston Huet, that most venerated of Loire winemakers, became mayor of Vouvray....

It is ‘an extraordinary vintage,’ says Jim Budd. ‘Now in its early middle age, the 1947 is wonderfully complex and is likely to still be drinkable in 2104.’ John Livingstone-Learmonth credits is as ‘the wine that started me off on the wine trail when I tasted it in 1973. Still today a cornucopia of scents, flavours, memories. It has wonderful artistic presence – history, music, bright colours."
