Château Ausone is a Bordeaux wine from the Saint-Émilion appellation, previously ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) in the Classification of Saint-Émilion. The winery is located on the Right Bank of France's Bordeaux wine region in the Gironde department, close to the town of Saint-Émilion and has 7ha of 100% classified vines - the smallest of all of the first growths. The winery also produces a second wine named La Chapelle d'Ausone, representing 10% of the total output.
Château Ausone withdrew from the Saint-Émilion classification process along with Chateau Cheval Blanc in July 2021, followed by Chateau Angelus in January 2022.. Any concerns that their withdrawal would impact pricing has been proven wrong. When it comes to price performance on the secondary market, there has been no discernible long-term effect for the three estates following their withdrawal.
In relation to their withdrawal, Château Ausone’s co-owner, Pauline Vauthier, was reported to say that her family’s choice to leave the St-Emilion classification wasn’t made ‘in concert’ with Château Cheval Blanc, but echoes the same reasoning.
‘We had been mulling over our decision for a long time, and finally decided to opt out (of the classification),’ she said. ‘Marketing and wine tourism are very nice things, but the measure of great wine comes down to terroir, viticulture and time.’
She said that a 10-year re-evaluation period based on verticals of 15 years is ‘too short’ to properly judge a wine’s capacity to age.
‘It was not an easy decision, but we continue to wholeheartedly support the St-Emilion and St-Emilion Grand Cru appellations,’
