Overview

The Hill of Grace is an 8ha single-vineyard with 4ha of shiraz planting, situated at the historic village of Parrot Hill 4km north-west of Henschke Cellars.

The first vines on the Hill of Grace vineyard were planted by Nicolaus Stanitzki. The villagers built a beautiful church that same year, naming it Gnadenberg Lutheran Church, in tribute to a region in their homeland. Cyril Henschke created the first Hill of Grace in 1958 from shiraz vines at Hill of Grace vineyard, up to 100 years old. The exceptional quality of the wine combined with the charm of the name captured the imagination of consumers.

The vineyard comprises Shiraz grapes on their own roots - the vines originate from pre-phylloxera material brought from Europe by the early European settlers. There are also small plantings of riesling, semillon and mataro. The oldest vines were planted in the 1860s by Nicolaus Stanitzki.

Henschke's family name and reputation are now being upheld by the sixth generation, Johann as Stephen, the biochemist and winemaker and Prue the viticulturist transition responsibilities to Johann who in 2012 Johann completed his Masters in Viticulture and Oenology in Geisenheim in Germany, a year of which was spent studying there, a year in Montpellier in France and six months in Madrid in Spain..

The highly sought-after Hill of Grace is the product of vines planted in the 1860s and is considered Australia's greatest single vineyard Shiraz.

Other wines include The Mount Edelstone Shiraz which has a large following, as does the Keyneton Estate. Henschke Rieslings are the finest in the Eden Valley and amongst the very best in Australia.
