Overview

Château Margaux was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and is the only First Growth in the Margaux appellation.

The estate can trace its vineyards to the end of the 1500s while the fine, neo-classical property was built in the 19th Century replacing the original building.

Greek-born entrepreneur, André Mentzelopoulos, acquired the estate in 1977 and his daughter, Corinne, took charge following his unexpected death in 1980. Corinne Mentzelopoulos remains at the helm and is the sole shareholder, running the estate with her daughter Alexandra.  Paul Bascaules is the current estate director, having taken on the role after Paul Pontallier’s long service from 1983 until his death in 2015. The 2015 pays homage to this stalwart of Château Margaux.

Around a third of the estate is devoted to vine growing, with 82 hectares of red grape varieties planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), then Merlot (20%) with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the remainder. With planting density of 10,000 vines per hectare, Château Margaux was the first Médoc estate to use the practice of ‘thinning’ to reduce yields.

Château Margaux also owns 12 hectares in the commune of Soussans planted with Sauvignon Blanc for the estate’s dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, whose reputation has grown and now equals that of Château La Mission Haut Brion Blanc.

The estate produces a second red wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and launched a third wine, Margaux de Château Margaux, in 2009.  Annual production is split 40% to the ‘grand vin’, 30% to the second wine and 30% to the third wine.

Château Margaux is renowned for its elegant profile and pronounced aromatics which lead to comparisons with Grand Cru Burgundy.
