Overview

Chateau Les Grands Chnes is a leading Medoc Cru Bourgeois property that is now producing wines comparable in quality to many 4me and 5me Cru Classe chateaux.

It is located at Saint-Christoly-De-Medoc in the far north of the Medoc appellation. It can trace its history back to the 14th century, although its past was generally undistinguished until 1981 when Jacqueline Gauzy-Darricade acquired it. She extensively replanted many of the vineyards as well as investing heavily in a new winery. The winery is now part of the Bernard Magrez stable. Celebrated oenologist Jacques Boisssenot is a consultant and the wines are now renowned for their depth of fruit and complexity.

The property consists of 7 hectares of vineyards located on gravel rich soil close to the Gironde Estuary. The wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and is matured in small oak barrels (one-third new) for 15-18 months. The wines remain very keenly priced. This Medoc wine has received good scores from various critics: the 2019 vintage was given a score of 90 by The Wine Advocate and the 2005 vintage was given a score of 90 by Wine Spectator.
