Château Rauzan-Gassies is a Margaux estate that achieved Second Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and remains family-owned and family-run to this day.
In the 18th Century, Rauzan-Gassies was part of the immense Rauzan estate under the ownership of Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan. In 1763, the estate was divided between two parts of the family and Rauzan-Gassies was born. The estate was purchased by the Quié family in 1946 and is managed today by grand-children Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe Quié, both fully qualified winemakers.
The 28.5 hectares of vineyards at Château Rauzan-Gassies are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%) and the remainder split equally between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare.
There is no actual château at Rauzan-Gassies, however, a new cellar was completed in 2017 in time for the 2018 harvest. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and approximately 50% new oak is used during the wines’ 12 months’ barrel ageing. The second wine, simply named Gassies from the 2009 vintage, shuns all new oak and is approachable from a much younger age. Older vintages of the second wine are labelled Chevalier de Rauzan-Gassies. A third wine, L’Orme de Rauzan-Gassies, is a Merlot-dominated blend bottled under the Haut-Médoc appellation.
The Quié family also owns Château Bel Orme Tronquoy de Lalande (Haut Médoc) and Château Croizet-Bages (Pauillac).
