Overview

Château Léoville Poyferré is in the Saint Julien commune of the Médoc and achieved Second Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

In the 18th Century, Léoville Poyferré was part of the vast Domaine de Léoville owned by the Marquis de Las Cases. Following the French Revolution, the estate was first divided in two, creating Château Léoville Las Cases and Château Léoville Barton, then, in 1840, the part that became Léoville Poyferré was split off from Léoville Las Cases through the marriage of Baron de Poyferré to the Marquis’ daughter.

The Cuvelier family purchased the estate in 1920 together with neighbouring property Château Moulin Riche. Current owner Didier Cuvelier has overseen a vast transformation since he took charge in 1979 while his niece Sara Lecomte-Cuvelier became Managing Director in 2017. Michel Rolland has been a long-standing consultant.

Spread over 80 hectares of varying soil types, the vineyards are planted with the four classic grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (23%), Petit Verdot (8%) and 4% Cabernet Franc. The first wine accounts for 55% of production from vines with an average age of 38 years. The second wine, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, is made from younger vines and accounts for the remaining 45%. Château Moulin Riche was the estate’s second wine until the 2009 vintage when it became a ‘grand vin’ in its own right.

The estate carries out strict selection and average yields of 35 hl/ha are lower than other Médoc properties.  Each plot is vinified separately in stainless steel and the final blend created once all the separate wines have undergone 18-20 months’ ageing in 70-80% new oak barrels.  Léoville Poyferré is renowned for being more luscious in style than the other Léovilles due to the higher proportion of Merlot in the blend.
