Château Haut-Brion, whose vineyards date from the 1500s, was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It is the sole First Growth in the Pessac-Leognan appellation, situated at the northern edge of the Graves and close to the city of Bordeaux.
Continuing the long list of distinguished owners, American financier Clarence Dillon acquired the estate in 1935 and his great-grandson, Prince Robert de Luxembourg, has been in charge since 2002. Jean-Philippe Delmas is the longstanding manager.
The vineyards comprise 48.35 hectares devoted to red grape varieties (45.4% Merlot, 43.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.7% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot) and 2.87 hectares to white (52.6% Semillon and 47.4% Sauvignon Blanc).
Château Haut-Brion produces both red and white wines of equal standing, although a mere 400 to 650 cases of Château Haut-Brion Blanc are produced annually. The ‘grand vin’ represents 40% of production and 40% is destined for the second red wine, Le Clarence de Haut Brion, renamed from Château Bahans Haut-Brion with the 2007 vintage.
The estate also releases a small quantity of a second white wine, La Clarte de Haut-Brion, known as Les Plantiers du Haut-Brion until the 2008 vintage. This label is somewhat atypical because the grapes are sourced from both Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
Château Haut-Brion is one of a portfolio of estates including Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Château Laville Haut-Brion and Château Quintus (formerly Tertre Daugay) owned by Domaine Clarence Dillon.
