Château Mouton Rothschild became the third First Growth in Pauillac in 1973 when it finally achieved official recognition, having been ranked a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.
Prior to its acquisition by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, the estate was called Château Brane-Mouton and took the Rothschild name at this time. It has since remained in the same family.
In the 1920s, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Nathaniel’s great-grandson, introduced château-bottling for Mouton Rothschild and the First Growths. He also began commissioning a prominent artist to design the label for each new vintage: Chagall, Miró, Picasso, Warhol, Hockney, Freud and Koons have all created original artworks for Mouton. In 1930, he launched Mouton Cadet and production of this major brand continues today using grapes supplied by selected growers.
The estate itself holds 83 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%). The average age of the vines is around 45 years while the oldest are more than 120 years old.
The ‘grand vin’ is aged in 100% new oak and this, coupled with the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, gives an exuberant wine with cassis and cigar-box hallmarks.
Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took over from her father in 1988 with the same drive and determination. In 1993, she introduced a second wine called Le Petit Mouton, labelled as such from the 1994 vintage onwards. The estate had already begun producing a dry white wine, Aile d'Argent, from 5 hectares of white grape plantings (53% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Sémillon, 11% Sauvignon Gris, 1% Muscadelle) from the 1991 vintage.
Since 2014, her children Philippe and Camille Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild manage both the estate and parent company, Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA.
Château Clerc Milon, Château d’Armailhac and joint ventures Opus One in California and Almaviva in Chile are part of the same group.
